Northwood High School and Jay M Robinson Middle School take state titles.

NCASA held the third annual The Quill on demand writing competition on Saturday March 2 hosted by Lexington Senior High School. Finishing in first place among high schools with a final score of 91.0 was Northwood High School. Team members for Northwood High School are James Calhoun, Frances Beroset, Jacob Friedman, and Quinn Kerscher.

Finishing in second place was Northwest Guilford High School with 89.3 points. Finishing in third place with 86.4 points was Atkins A&T High School. Compete standings are shown below:

· James Stallings of Northwest Guilford HS in the Argumentation category.

· Aliyah Wright of Lexington Senior HS in the Creative Writing category.

· James Calhoun of Northwood HS in the Problem / Solution category.

· Tumi Mabaso of Atkins A&T HS in the Literary Analysis category.

This was the first NCASA State Title for Northwood HS.

Finishing in first place among middle schools with a final score of 81.5 was Jay M Robinson Middle School. Team members for Jay M Robinson Middle School were Maura Boeno, Parker Wallace, and Kate Welch.

Finishing in second place was Elizabeth City Middle School with 75.9 points. Finishing in third place with 74.3 points was Central Middle School of Gates County. Compete standings are shown below:

· Kate Welch of Jay M Robinson MS in the Argumentation category.

· Simone-Elise Honeycutt of Lexington MS in the Narrative category.

· Niamh Massey of Elizabeth City MS in the Informational category.

This was the second consecutive State Title for Jay M Robinson Middle School who also won the Twelve Competition in December, 2012.

A State Champion trophy was presented to both winning schools. Trophies were also presented to each individual event winner. Medallions were awarded to each student from the first, second, and third place schools. Pictures are available upon request.

The Quill is the first ever statewide on-demand writing competition. Three to four students from each school are presented prompts. Each student has ninety minutes to create a written response based on the presented prompt. The purpose of this competition is to allow future novelists, scientists, and journalists to benchmark themselves against the best students across North Carolina.
