New Middle School Scholastic Program
The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities is delighted to announce the addition of a middle school program for the 2012-2013 school year.
On January 23 the NCASA Board of Directors voted to add a comprehensive middle school scholastic program which will include the presentation of three to five competitions and a unique partnership with existing middle school level competitions. A committee composed of middle school principals, teachers, and scholastic directors is already working to develop the competitions NCASA will present to middle schools next year. Under consideration are Quiz Bowl, The Quill (a writing competition), Show Choir, Speech and Debate, a Visual Arts competition, and an NC / NC History based competition.
This committee will also make recommendations to the full BOD concerning partners with whom we will present the Middle School Cup. These partners are expected to include Science Olympiad, Odyssey of the Mind, Envirothon, MathCounts, and an additional two to three competitions. The Middle School Cup will be presented to the Middle School with the best overall performance among all NCASA and partner competitions.
Extra-curricular activities and competitions presented and supported by NCASA are critical to the development of all students. These competitions allow students to explore their interests and benchmark themselves against
the best students in their district, region, and the entire state. NCASA membership offers schools a comprehensive program that ensures quality and
integrity in all competitions.
NCASA grants member schools unlimited access to all competitions at no additional charge. The current high school membership fee is $100 per school plus $0.25 per student. We expect to offer middle school membership
at a similar rate, and will likely offer an incentive as we did this year to LEA's who register all their schools for membership. More than 10% of LEA's have registered all their high schools for NCASA membership including
Winston-Salem Forsyth, Sampson, Burlington-Alamance, and Granville Counties. Our ultimate goal is 100% membership and participation of all North Carolina schools.
We will share more information about middle school competitions, partners, and membership as it becomes available. Contact NCASA Executive Director Leon Pfeiffer at
